JERUSALEM ∙ As clashes between the Israeli army and Hamas continue to escalate at various points in Gaza, the US has stepped up pressure on Israel to soften the blow. Face-to-face fighting continues in 5 towns including Shajaya in northern Gaza, Magazi in central Gaza and Khan Yunis in southern Gaza. The number of dead and injured in Khan Younis and Rafah hospitals has increased.

4 more people were killed after Israel bombed houses in Rafah. Israel also carried out heavy shelling in the areas adjacent to the Egyptian border in the east of Rafah. 2 journalists of Al Jazeera TV were injured in Khan Younis. The Israeli military claimed to have destroyed a Hamas base in the town of Shajaiya, which has been under heavy fighting for days. 9 Israeli soldiers including 2 colonels were killed in an encounter here.

Two months into the war, the number of Palestinians killed in Gaza by Israel has exceeded 19,000. The US national security adviser arrived in Tel Aviv on Thursday amid strong international protests over the massacre in Gaza. The US is proposing to reduce the widespread ground attack and bombing and to change the war strategy. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the war will continue until complete victory is achieved. Defense Minister Yov Gallant also said that the war would last three to four months. The New York Times reported that Israeli forces destroyed at least six cemeteries in northern Gaza this month. The report is based on satellite and video images
