India's own air defense system Aakash is in demand
The Indian-made Akash air defense missile system is in demand internationally. Countries like the Philippines, Brazil and Egypt have expressed their interest in acquiring Akash. India has already reached an agreement with Armenia worth $600 million (roughly Rs. 4,990 crore). The delivery of the Akash air defense missile system to Armenia will begin within a few months, the news agency ANI reported, citing defense officials.
The Akash air defense missile system was developed by Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), India's defense research institute. Akash has been a part of the Indian Army for over a decade. Meanwhile, the defense researchers were able to make various modernizations in the Akash air defense.
West Asian countries have shown interest in Akash earlier. The latest changes made to Aakash are in testing phase. The Akash missile system has demonstrated its strength by simultaneously destroying four targets coming for aerial attack. This performance was during the air exercise named Ashtra Shakti 2023 held on December 12 at the Surya Lanka Air Force Station.
Akash Missile System was realized under DRDO by various defense public sector organizations and private industries. Both the Indian Air Force and the Indian Army have been using Aakash for the past ten years. In September 2019, the Air Force had again placed an order for the Akash air defense missile system
DRDO scientists have been successful in making continuous modernizations and changes to the Akash missile system. This also led to increased demand from West Asia and Southeast Asia. As a successful model, IIT Mumbai has established the form of Akash missile. It was unveiled by DRDO chief Samir V Kamath with an aim to attract more youth to the field of defense research.
