Covid-19 sub-variant JN.1 was detected in a 79-year-old Kerala woman
Covid sub variant Jn. 1 was detected in Kerala during surveillance led by the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG).
JN.1 case was detected in RT-PCR positive sample from Thiruvananthapuram district.
A case of covid sub-variant JN.1 was detected in Kerala as part of ongoing surveillance by the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG). The sub-variant was detected in an RT-PCR positive sample from Karakulam in Thiruvananthapuram district on December 8.
Corona was confirmed in the sample tested on November 18.
A 79-year-old woman had mild symptoms of influenza-like illness (ILI) and has since recovered from Covid.
As part of a routine exercise by the Union Health Ministry, a mock drill is being conducted in all health centers across states to assess their public health and hospital preparedness.
The health ministry is in touch with the state health authorities and monitoring the situation, the government said in a press release.
'The trend of Covid cases from Kerala has been increasing for the past few weeks. This is due to an increase in the number of samples from ILI cases being referred for testing. "Most of these cases are clinically mild and recover at home without any treatment," the press release said.
The health department is also monitoring various entry points to Kerala.
The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) is a network of genomic laboratories that is monitoring the coronavirus in the country from a genomic perspective. Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is a part of this consortium.
According to updated surveillance guidelines for Covid, ILI and SARI patients are screened for viral disease and positive cases are referred for whole genome sequencing (WGS).
